October 26, 1944

Dear Milan,

Goodness that storm sounded pretty bad, I am wondering, is it a safe place to be? To say the least it helps keep things from becoming dull, or does it. I bet your folks were concerned, they can't help wondering if things are o.k.

I remember one day while working on the line at the air base a couple years ago there blew up a terrible storm here in the spring all the fellows had heard it was to be a terrible tornado, they canceled all passes, tied all the planes to the ground, many of the fellows called their wives to rush to the basements to their homes they were frightened and then were they ever surprised to find it was so mild.

But by the paper it was no joking matter, it would be exciting to say the least not knowing what to expect. The war seems to be coming along nicely up to present, but I wonder if it will always continue to be just that easy with the Japs?

So Alfred Bates is in Germany, what kind of work is he doing and his rank? Do you ever hear where Dayton is? Wasn't he in England when you were? Incidentally just how long were you ever seas? That is an excellent place to have your picture in a scrap book, I am surely looking forward to your coming home.

I was busier then a bee yesterday afternoon. Alice, my boss, was gone. The two of us are kept busy all the time, she will be gone for two weeks the first of Nov. However there will be another woman to help out but she has her own job too. It is the first office job I have ever had that seems more like playing a game then actually working. there are so many different things to it, It's the voucher section of the Engines B-24 and a few B-29 and the girls are so nice.

We just about have Marilyn King married, her sister Margaret is flying home today (Saturday is the big day). There is a USO formal that evening too.

Incidentally I received an answer about a job in the Tampa Shipbuilding Co, they are hiring women and also at the same wage as I was getting on the west coast. Velma the girl from Calif. has found I can still come and get my job there in L.A. so I've found I can still be assured of a job one or the other end of the country. I don't know but what I prefer welding to office work for one is working out of doors and doing physical exercise, incidentally when is the rainy season in Florida? The winter months is the time in Calif., but it isn't bad.

Do you like Chinese food? I love it, Alice and I are going to the Jolly and having chow mein. However that dish was originated in this country, I enjoy it all my self. I see by the map of Tampa there is a Spanish Cafe, have you tried any of it?

Oh yes we have been having some wonderful weather the past several weeks, up to then I had almost forgotten how nice it could be here. It can't last long though.

I must close for lunch period is nearly over and we are very busy, until I hear from you I remain

As ever,
Kathleen

Oct. is nearly over and I'm hoping Nov. blows in and out. Dec. can't come fast enough for me huh.

October 25, 1944

Dear Kathleen,

Almost a week has gone by since I last sat down to drop you a couple lines so perhaps I'd better get down to business and let you know I'm still here. Then too I'm anxious to hear from you too, and that's the only way I'll get one isn't it? Ha! Yes. I like "love" to get them (your letters) ever so much.

I'm sure the boys at Winter General Hospital enjoyed having you come out and play cards with them. I know when I was at Halloran General Hospital, Staten Island, N.Y. the boys sure enjoyed having the girls out from the Canteen in N.Y. City. No doubt a lot of those boys are getting discharges from the army.

I'm going over to the library and seeing if they have a copy of "Look" dated 31st of Oct. I'm sure I'll be interested if it has anything to do with what we have been discussing the past few months. I think I've seen the picture, "Impatient Years".

I'm a bit tired this evening as a result of the Physical fitness test I took. Perhaps I over did it just a bit. I hope I'm in better shape when I go down to the base and try to win the $25 war Bond for the most physically fit. I did fifty-five sit-ups, thirteen chin-ups and ran three hundred yards in forty-five seconds. I'll have to improve all three of them in order to place at the base but I believe it is worth a trial. I've been out in the bay rowing a lot which has helped to build up my muscles a lot. Of course I always take a fishing pole along but there hasn't been very many fish in the bay here lately due to the fact the tide hasn't been coming like it used to.

I used to enjoy Major Bowes Program very much but I've not heard him for I don't know how long. I'm usually down on the base and in the evening going to a show which probably accounts for me not listening to a lot of radio programs.

I don't seem to remember Dorothy Blush but I know the King girl for George Cochran went with her sister at one time. Gee! most of the ole gang is married now.

Tampa is an interesting city but it isn't arranged very well and spreads out for miles. Mac Dill is almost due south of Tampa Kathleen. If you follow Bayshore Drive out it will lead you right to the field. St. Peter is across the bay from Tampa and there are two bridges which take one over there. There Gandy bridge or Davis bridge will take you over there. All summer we had ferry service from the field to St. Peter. Rattlesnake, Florida isn't very far from the field either but I've not gone over to eat any rattlesnake sandwiches or meat. I've been told it is very good though.

The shipyards are located on Hookers point. They are just starting to build steel ships. They have been building concrete ships until a month ago.

Kathleen I'm marking the days off until that furlough also so you haven't a thing on me. Gee I'm certainly looking forward toward the 4 of Dec. for that's when it will start or 5th as we can't start on Sat. or Sunday but taking a second look at the calender before me I can have it start the second of December which is Sat and leave Friday evening so that's when I'll apply for. According to new order I'll get 15 days plus travel so that sounds good doesn't it.

I have not taken any pictures as yet on this roll of film and if I can't get any more I shall save it so we can get some snapshots. I'll do my best to get another roll so we have two.

My dear that about winds things up so I will close for now. Pleasant dreams.

Truly yours,
Milan

October 30, 1944

Dear Milan,

Another interesting letter came today from Milan, goodness but they are most welcomed. I have just come from a USO supper and meeting just for the girls. There was a splendid talk from one of the Capt. at W. General; he told us girls what we should do for these GI Jo's when they come back to help them adjust themselves to civilian life, he said encourage them to go back to college, was one of the best ways to get adjusted.

Milan, do you remember Thelma Galliger, she went with Theo Rost. I hear she had a collapse and is in the state hospital. I surely feel sorry for her.

Marilyn's wedding came off nicely and was quite elaborate for their means. Ruth Cochran and I crashed the USO formal afterward, we had formals on anyway.

Milan, I have about three rolls of my camera 616 and two of another camera 116, so we will have some here. We are able to get them through Halls by going up the 1st day in each month and signing up for a roll.

That sounds wonderful, 15 days, how many days does it take to get from Tampa to Topeka? If you wait long enough, they will be giving you a month ha! that would be nice though.

October 31, 1944

Here it is Halloween. They are having a big city wide deal at the auditorium each year. I dropped in after spending the evening at the USO. It was a mess I just looked the situation over and left.

However there was the beautiful moon this evening. It looked more like the sun for it was so reddish-yellow, it seemed to illuminate the sky with light. It looked like a pumpkin up there in the sky, very appropriate for Halloween.

Plan to spend tomorrow evening playing cards with the patients, it's not me it's the girls as a whole and when I see the one being happy, it makes me feel the same.

Sounds as though you are working toward that contest, is it something each camp has? What kind of test do they give to decide you could be he winner? Speaking of exercise I tried some of the mild GI exercises several weeks ago. It took 3 or 4 days before I could move without hurting- my muscles were so sore.

I have received the news from another shipyard that they are hiring welders and at the same wage as the west coast.

Saw Eleen Ready on the street this morning. You remember her? Ona May's sister. Her husband has just been shipped out, [she] has been out on the west coast with him. Ona May's husband is in Africa for the duration.

November 1, 1944

I seem to be having a time getting this off. I seem to get so sleepy each night that I go to bed instead of finish.

I got fooled this evening, got out to the Winter General and no girls something about that I was informed wrong. I was on my way home so I stopped at the post office to mail this for I'm looking forward to another (letter) from you.

Truly yours,
Kathleen

November 1, 1944

Dear Kathleen,

There is nothing like starting the month off right so I shall endeavor to drop you a few lines. Yesterday we got paid as you probably know. We get paid the last day of every month except sometimes they don't pay on Sunday.

Well it seems quite safe down here now but when those storms come up it is a very good idea to be in a storm proof building and away from the ocean. I must admit it did change our routine for a few days. Mother did not know there was a storm in this part of the country or she would have worried and I have not heard from my bro or Dad. Actually there isn't any reason to worry if one gets prepared for it.

I caught a nice cold so I had to stay out of the Physical fitness test. Perhaps it was the best thing that could happen. I feel a lot better today, but I'm still eating tablets to get rid of it and seem to be winning the battle.

Alfred Bates is a Cpt. in the Field Artillery but I don't know what his duties are but no doubt he is on a gun crew of one of those big guns. I've not heard from Dayton in a very long time but the last time I heard he was still at the same place he was when I was over there. Dayton and I went to Scotland together and we certainly spent seven grand days traveling and seeing sights, Kathleen I spent thirteen months overseas and all of that was spent at one camp over there.

Certainly glad to hear you are busy and like your job. You must be working in an interesting Dept. and also your fellow workers must be quite nice. I'm sure glad you are getting along so well.

I don't know too much about the seasons but I think from now on till about April is rather a dry season. They don't have a rainy season here like the one in Calif. It may rain very hard for a few hours but the sun comes out for a few hours at least each day. In a lot of ways I like it better down here but the country has not been developed as well as Calif. has been.

From what I read in the local papers I had the impression they paid about as good here as anywhere but of course they always make things look good in a local paper. I also like to work outside so I guess we got something in common there. It is also good to know that there are jobs open here for you. From what I've read in the papers jobs should be quite plentiful at the shipyards for sometime to come.

I've not eaten a lot of Chinese food but what I've eaten I liked very much. We had a Chinese cook with us overseas and he used to throw together some Chinese dishes but naturally they were not as good as they could have been if he had been able to get the proper combination of food. I've not eaten in that Spanish Cafe.

Gee! I'm counting the days till I can take off for home and see you. I have to start my furlough on Dec. 4 but I'll be able to leave on the evening of the 3rd which should put me in Topeka on the evening of the fifth providing everything goes okay. Well here's hoping for I've been looking forward to meeting you a long time. You said it about making this month fly by fast. Dec. just can't get here too soon to please me and I don't mean perhaps.

I've been out enjoying the sunshine the past few days and tomorrow I intend to go fishing in the bay since I have the day off. Last eve I went to see Kay Kyser in "Carolina Blues" and I enjoyed it a lot.

That is all for now as I've ran out of things to say. Good-nite and pleasant dreams until I hear from you. I remain

Truly Yours,
Milan

November 8, 1944

Dear Milan,

That's too bad about the cold they are not a bit pleasant. The boating sounds like fun, is it in the bay or ocean? How many fish did you catch? It sounds as though you don't get Sunday off.

Well election has come and gone and soon will be Dec. 5 and that will be a delightful two weeks and I don't mean maybe.

How does the election returns strike the majority of the boys down at the Mc Dill? Incidentally Milan could you tell me who would take over in case the president, vice-president and Sec. of state should die? ---the undertakers would take over ha! ha! I bit on it my self.

Speaking of film Mother was not able to get any at Hall's this month. It's been discontinued I guess.

I went to the WG hospital with the USO to dance with the patients however it turned out a visiting party mostly. Many of them were unable to even walk. It really makes a civilian realize a war is taking place. I love to dance, but it was fun listening to them talk and tell about their experience which they seem to want us to hear about. Are there many injured from overseas patients stationed at McDill?

Speaking of McDill I've been sending out a lot of advanced shipping tickets to your field the past several days.

Do you like Florida better then at first? Does the dampest there cause the rash that you had in England? I bet you will love Florida when you get here and it's snowing and it's lovely down there. I really don't think I half appreciated Calif. until I got here. I'm itching to return.

Have you decided whether you will come by bus or train? I hope you have better luck then the last. It won't be long now, let's see when you get this, it will be three weeks- not bad?

It's a good thing your Mother didn't notice it in the paper about the Florida storm, to keep her from worrying. I guess I'm a little lax about keeping up with the news except what comes over the radio instead of reading I spend that time sewing. The last several days at noon and riding home I've been knitting some wash cloths for gifts or something, haven't decided. Got the idea from Marilyn's shower, she was given some as a gift. Some think I'm a bit foolish to spend all the time on wash cloths.

Must draw this to a close. Bye for now.

Truly Yours,
Kathleen.

November 7, 1944

Dear Kathleen,

Well the election is almost over except the shoutings as I sit here writing you this eve. It is quite cool and the moon is down. I also noticed the beautiful full moon down here the 31st. The paper stated it was a great nite for Torts and Witches.

I'll let you in on a secret Kathleen, I can't hardly wait till I get your next letter. Another week closer to that day that I may depart for home. One of the boys in my ward is leaving this Sat. and he will be back in time to take over the ward when I leave.

Yes I knew Thelma Galliger. I danced with her at the Egyptian when I was home the last time. She was very worried at that time. Gee it certainly is a shame.

I also hope to get a roll of 616 this month if they go that far at the PX. So we should be able to get a few pictures. There isn't any substitute for snapshots as remembrances.

It took about 52 hours to get home last time but I shall do my best to get home a bit faster this time if I can.

I spent Halloween by going to a movie at the base and then I went over to the Service Club where there was a dance going on. It was a regular rat race so I didn't even try dancing.

You know I sure enjoyed that letter even if it was written a bit at a time. I sure got a big kick out of the cartoons in the corner. XXX(Doesn't make censor) Ha! ha!

I have been very busy this past week and when I get home, I mean in the barracks, I just hit the bunk. Tonite I'm about to start quoting election returns. I'll be glad when ti is all over so they can go on with the war.

I went out boating and fishing today again. I caught one trout for a change. I cleaned it and fried it in the ward.

Well Kathleen I guess I must bid you adieu now but I will be thinking of you. So pleasant dreams till I hear from you.

Truly Yours,
Milan

November 14, 1944

Dear Milan,

You're not the only one who is looking forward to letters, it is becoming a habit every Monday. I don't mind it - when you get this I figure it will be just two more weeks. I'm getting pretty excited myself.

Have been Christmas shopping this evening; am trying to get such matters off my mind before Dec. 1st. You know it's almost impossible to find things in the stores.

So you get a kick out of the Cartoon; it was given to me by Gracie, so am using it, little does she know who; however.

You remember Leland Cochran? He has rheumatic fever, is in an army hospital someplace in the west, expects to be there about six months, so it must be pretty bad.

I met Carole W. Delp on the street the other day, asking her about things in general and how she liked living in the south- Tampa at least- she didn't seem to have a thing good to tell me about that place. She said, of course a lot of people don't like Calif. either. Little did she know why I wanted to know, we were comparing it to Calif.

Met some of my old girl friends this evening. We decided to have a gabb session over supper and a show Wed. evening.

The trout makes my mouth water at the thought of it, you must like fish too. I love it, any kind.

Have been listening to a radio play while writing this, it's "Magnificent Obsessions" by Lloyd Douglas. I enjoyed all his stories, it's a lovely story about doctors.

Saw a cute show Sunday evening "Janie" just a typical home. Jane is entertaining the service men while the folks are out for the evening. It turns out to be the regiment.

Must draw this to a close, it's past bed time.

Pleasant dreams, Milan

Yours truly,
Kathleen

Nov 14, 1944

Dear Kathleen,

I'm slipping yes indeed. So here is an Airmail letter to make for lost time. Between boating and Physical exercise and duty I've not had much time to spare the past week. Sunday was my day off so I slept late and then went to mess early and went out fishing at noon and caught three nice trout which we cleaned and fried. Say I believe that was about the best fish I've ever eaten. This PM I went with a couple of other boys and we caught eight more trout so perhaps we'll eat again after awhile. I only caught one fish today. We fish out in the bay here. We take turns on taking our days off. Usually one day a week and two or three half days depending upon the amount of work.

I'm still hoping to get a roll of film here this month if everything goes okay. Gee! It certainly won't be long anymore and say am I looking forward toward the 3rd of Dec. for that's when I leave. I'm certainly looking forward to seeing you too as we'll certainly have a lot to do.

Kathleen one of the best cures for those boys across the way is to let them get their experiences off their chest so if one is a good listener they can do them a world of good. We don't have any overseas injured patients here but there is a hospital over at St. Pete which get a lot of those cases.

Florida is very nice at this time of the year but I certainly didn't like the summer months at all. If I could have been outside and wouldn't have had to work well it might have been alright. I'm able to keep my skin condition under control down here. If I could stay out doors more I wouldn't be bothered at all. I sort of believe I like the climate down here better as a whole than that in Calif.

If I can't get a plane off the base here I think I'll take a train for I believe I can get home just a bit sooner by taking a train. I'll be able to leave at 6 PM Sunday Eve. By the way your letter arrived three weeks to the day.

Well it's rather nice if you know how to knit for I think a personal gift is very nice. One can always buy things but hand made things have a value which is priceless. Then too it is a very nice hobby. While I was in the hospital I made some mats but they were knit.

It certainly has been grand down here the past few days. It has been chilly of a morning but just cool enough to make one work. It certainly has been very dark when I've been going to the ward in the morn. though.

I'm planning on going to the movie Thurs. or Fri. as "For When The Bells Toll" is playing and tomorrow at the Service Club they have a "Lil' Abner" dance so perhaps I'll go to that. I signed the payroll the other day so that means this month is almost half gone now.

I must say Good-nite for now and here's hoping to hear from you and see you before very long. Best of everything till then.

Truly Yours,
Milan

November 17, 1944

Dear Milan,

You know what-- I can't wait to get home this evening. This noon, I just happened to call mother and she tells me there is an Air Mail from you there, of course that has me rather excited to just know-- are you coming sooner then you expected? Or that you are not going to get to come? Oh heck! It can't be that. There must be some change, I bet. Mother tried to tell me she would open it and read it and see, but I informed her it could wait, however as I sit here with not too much work to do and thinking and wondering just what it could be. Of course I will find out in 4.5 more hours, but that seems Oh! so long.

The folks are going to the annual Farm Bureau Dinner at the auditorium this evening. They were telling me that last year you were a speaker there and that the governor introduced you, that was quite an honor, Milan. That is something to be proud of to say the least, Milan.

It is getting colder here this week, everyone is saying it sure is to snow before the day is over, no sign yet though.

Have been going to the USO several times this week. Found myself playing ping pong and miniature bowling with the girls, that is one way to get some recreation and make the time pass faster, it is I think too. For it is just a little over two weeks before you will be here, I hope, if this letter at home is not telling me different.

(Later)

I was tickled to get that air mail and also glad no changes have been made. Gee! but you write interesting letters. That fish sounds so good, plus those afternoons and day off a week. You know you surely did answer my desire, just this morning I was wishing I'd hear from you, then, it did come. I expected to wait until next Monday. I'm sure counting the days, when you get this, however it will be just two weeks.

A plane- home- that sounds wonderful. Too good! Will your folks meet you? I know they will be anxious to see you. In case they aren't and you don't have a way, if you will give me a ring 25068, we have a car; however I do realize how my folks enjoying visiting with my brothers when they first come in. It means so much to them.

We girls really enjoy hearing about the boys' experience, but we have been informed to keep their minds off of it.

I have a new ride- right to the door now I get home by 5:15 which helps. Incidentally you're doing a good job of talking up Florida. ha! ha!

You say you made some knitted mats? Maybe you could teach me something new, huh! I'd enjoy it.

Will draw this to a close and take this into North Topeka tonight since the folks have gone for the evening. They won't miss that bit of gas and you can get this soon. Bye for now.

With love,
Kathleen

P.S. "Happy Thanksgiving" another work day huh!
You know that air mail just took from 12:30 PM Nov. 15. I got it Nov 17: fast work. I'll send mine straight so you won't get them the same day. Good-night.

November 20, 1944

Dear Kathleen,

Here's hoping this letter doesn't cause as much excitement as the last one did. I never thought it might cause you to worry. Everything looks favorable at the present time so I suppose my furlough will go through okay. The Sgt. said something about setting it back one day so perhaps I'll be leaving on the eve of the 4th and I suppose I'll take the train. Otherwise things remain just like they were. By the way don't be surprised if I give you a ring when I get in for that's just what I intended to do for we'll have a lot to talk about. My Aunt and cousin live in Seabrook so I can stay at their house if my folks are not there to meet me or can't get in.

Gee! Kathleen it is just perfect wonderful, two letters from you within a couple of days. I wanted to write sooner but I've been so tired that I just hit my bunk after cleaning up a bit. I hope to have another helper starting tomorrow so perhaps Sidney and myself will be able to take it just a bit easier. We have worked the past week without any time off. We've had around fifteen patients and had to feed nine of them on the ward. Three of them have been bed patients and we had to give them baths and everything. Of course we do all KP and cleaning up in General so we sure are wore down. Well it is well worth it if I can get home to see you.

I got two swell letters today from boys I was with while I was in England. It is always swell to hear from them. This one boy whom writes me lives in Neb. so perhaps we'll get to see one another one of these days. At the present time there is ice on the ground over there and quite cold. Gee! That is a lot different from the type of weather we are having down here. It has been raining today but it isn't very cold outside.

Tampa isn't a very well planned city and the fact they dump their sewage into the Bay doesn't improve things either. St. Pete across the bay is a very nice clean city. In my way of thinking you can't beat the weather we are having now but gee it certainly wasn't a bit nice this past summer. Well some people like it down here and others don't. There isn't a lot to do down here for one thing.

I'm hoping to go out fishing Wed. if I get this new helper. I certainly enjoy going out boating and fishing especially when the fish are biting. The trout season really doesn't open till about Jan. but there are quite a few in the bay at the present time. We have been using Salad oil to fry the fish in and it sure works great. Of course these Century Hot Points are very nice to fry things on too.

I went to a movie last eve but for the life of me I can't think of the name of it. I certainly enjoyed "For Whom The Bell Tolls".

Yes, Kathleen a year ago I was a special guest at the Farm Bureau Dinner but I had to get up out of a sick bed to make it and even then I could hardly speak but I did enjoy it ever so much and something to remember. Yes, I've been very lucky in more way than one I guess. It certainly was sweet of you to get this latest letter on its way sooner for gee they mean ever so much to me. I'm just living for the day when I can be there at home with you. Yes, I 'll probably be working Thanksgiving Day as yet I don't even know on which day will get the big dinner on. Well someone has to take care of the sick and try and cheer them up. I have one officer whom got caught in the upper turret and has a fractured clavicle.

By the way two weeks to the day before I leave. I must bid you good-nite and pleasant dreams for now.

With Love,
Milan

November 24, 1944

Dear Milan,

I was surely glad to hear from you today. Being Thanksgiving no mail being delivered wasn't so good, for each day and each each letter has something nice in store. For it is getting that much closer to the time you will be home. Let's see your present plans will get you into Topeka Wednesday evening instead of Tuesday. You know, Milan, I was surprised to hear you plan to call me as soon as you get in for I thought you would want to be with your folks the first evening. I will be expecting a ring Wed. evening then; however you know I have heck of a time getting this line, you see we have some kids on the line that play on the phone. So in case it is busy you might call Grandma 21371. Or in case you come in during the day and want to give me a ring before going home the number at work is 32391 (ext. 21).

You know if I had some idea which train you will come on (station, I mean) I could call and find out the time from K.C. I might miss you, though. Our family always makes an effort to meet anyone at the station that comes in and I can't get it out of my blood or something. I love to meet trains and better still ride them ha! ha!

You have no idea how much I enjoy your letters. The other day I got them all out and re-read them. They were so interesting, just like an interesting story.

Am trying to concentrate on the letter and hearing "people are funny". It's crazy what takes place in Hollywood.

Sounds as though you could be an excellent husband with all that practicable experience and be a good nurse maid some day in a pinch even to cooking.

Yesterday- Thanksgiving, we worked as usual, then had supper at the Penant, then a show seeing "Two Girls and a Sailor" cute.

The folks told me they had a nice visit with your folks at the farm bureau dinner. I do hope I can meet them while you are here. I didn't know young people went. When the folks got home [they told me] Vivian Gipple, Carole, West Delp, your brother and a few other young people were there and they danced and even square danced too. I would have gone in a minute for I love to dance. Do you? Square is fun too.

Have been working on a wool aqua dress trimmed in brown velvet the past several evenings. Hoping to finish it before you come; just one of my creations.

Must draw this to a close now for I'm falling asleep- pleasant dreams Milan.

With love,
Kathleen

P.S. When you get this, you will be there less then a week before coming home huh! Time is drawing close.

Nashville, Tenn.

Dear Kathleen,

Yes, I've been moved and it all happened so fast that I've not been able to catch my second breath as yet. We were told last Friday morn. to pack and that evening at 6 PM we were on our way here. We got into town here about 7 PM. Sunday we spent sleeping and today they have had me working in supply. I'm supposed to take charge of a ward they are opening up or one in which the ward master leaves for a lot of the old fellows are due to leave shortly.

Now my dear I shall try to answer what you are wondering about. I still have hope of getting my furlough in Dec. at least what's what I was told this morn. and I shall remind them of it Kathleen.

I fear I won't like it around here as our quarters are very poor and get very cold as we have coal stoves and our bath facilities are located in another bldg separate from our barracks.

It is also very smoky around here which is very disagreeable. We do eat very well around here. For one thing we get all the milk we want. If and when I start working it will be eight hours a day six days a week. A married fellow can live off the post six nites a week but must be on the post Friday nite and when ever he pulls C. 2 in my case.

I'm working in Unit Supply at the present time but that will only be temporary. That about sums up things as I see them but perhaps there are some things I've forgotten which you might like to know so feel free to ask me. I think I shall try and phone you tonite and let you know where I'm at.

Good-nite and pleasant dreams till we hear from one another

With Love,
Milan

P.S. They seem to be breaking up Mac Dill Field for 53 medics were due to leave Sunday for Infantry and more the first of the month.

Dear Kathleen,

Honestly this evening I don't know where to begin. Perhaps I better tell you I wouldn't get through the other eve to talk to you so I'm going to concentrate on getting that furlough of mine.

I got your Thanksgiving letter today and gee it certainly was wonderful hearing from you once again after not getting a mail for almost a week. By the way today is Thanksgiving Day in Tenn.

Tomorrow morning I'm going in and have a talk with the first Sgt. and see if I can get my leave right away for I don't think it is so important to be home on Xmas Day. I believe the weather might be nicer the first of the month but if I must wait for the Xmas Furloughs I'll leave here the 11th of this month. Well Kathleen I do hope it isn't very much longer before we can get to see one another.

Above all things I want to get home and see and be with Mother the first nite Kathleen but I do intend to give you a ring and make arrangements when we can get together. We can't leave here early so I will arrive at home in the day time so don't be surprised if you get a call while you are at work. I don't know what train I will come in on from here or time it leaves or arrives but I understand the connections are very good from here. If I do get home in the day time I might be able to pick you up in the eve.

Now a few lines to let you know what it is like up here in Nashville. I'm still working in Unit supply and I've been kept quite busy indeed. We take care of getting clothing repaired and exchanged, exchange white uniforms and sheets also take care of clothing for those going on leave and issue clothing. Well I'm just helping but it has been a good change from what I've been doing. Well new men are coming in every day to replace those qualified for overseas duty. We were all given physical exams the other day. So at present time a lot of the fellows are doing detail work. For that reason I believe I'll be able to get home at the present time. Say I'm in the Det. Day Room and there is a radio going so if I get my mind off the subject well excuse me please. I certainly should gain wt. around here if I continue eating like I have the last few days. They certainly have the best mess here that I've run up against since I've been in the Army but gee those barracks are terrible.

Ran out of ink in my other pen. So I hope this one will carry on. I believe I let you in on some of the things around here. I might add we have to put up with coal stoves. Gee I miss that Florida sunshine. Well a couple more boys from Mac Dill arrived here yesterday and they also are ready to return but that's army life for you. They send one where ever they decide to.

So you think I should make an excellent husband. Well I certainly would do my best or die trying. I love to dance but I'm rather out of practice. Gee I certainly do like to square dance ever so much. By the way I'm certainly looking forward to see[ing] you in that dress of yours and perhaps you could wear it to a dance. Kathleen I'd love to have you come out and meet the folks and I'm sure Mother would like to have you. Perhaps tonite I've let you in on a few of the things I've had in my mind.

Once again I better say good-nite. Gee did you notice the beautiful moon this evening. So pleasant dreams Kathleen till we see one another-

With love
Milan

December 2, 1944

Dear Milan,

Goodness! but I was surprised with the move no more fishing in the bay for Milan. Heck! and the nice weather. Goodness one never knows how long they will be in one place.

Incidentally Ray is stationed about 70 miles from Nashville, Camp Philips in Kentucky. You are now less then half way home. Milan, does that put you in a different Air Force?

You ask is, do I have any question. I have, which will I know, let me know when you know. Just when you will be coming? You may get here for Christmas after all.

I am going to cut this short for I'm going to a U.S.O formal at the auditorium this evening. The folks are almost ready to take me in. Wish you could be here for it. There is to be a Christmas formal the 23rd of Dec. Maybe you will be here for it- I hope.

The Thanksgiving menu sounded interesting with all the names. I found your name.

Ardis called just a minute ago. Alan, 18 months, said "Hi" over the phone- so cute- we were over there last evening for supper.

It is surely lucky you were not put in the Inf. Gosh! that would have been terrible.

The new move may all work out nicely- Is it pretty cold there? Is the camp very close to town?

Until I hear from you again.

With love, Kathleen

Wish you were here to go to the formal with me.

December 4, 1944

Dear Milan,

Mother called me today at work and told me I had another letter from you at home. I can't wait maybe it will have some news for I know now when you do get to come you may know just a few hours before you leave, will be the chance.

You mentioned in the letter Saturday you thought of calling me. Goodness! that would have excited me so not be expecting it. I wonder if I could have talked. Yes, I know I could, but it would have been something new. I was not at home all evening Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday, however I was here Thursday and Friday. I had been wondering just what might be wrong when you didn't write all last week until Saturday, but figured it was a good reason, and sure enough it was.

Well there will be even much more to talk about when you arrive now, another move. Isn't it mountainous near Nashville? Ray says its very pretty, the farms seem to be very good in Kentucky, but the modern convenience are meager as a whole.

I have just been talking to a woman who has been to Nashville as she assures me, it is not a nice place to be, its damp and cold. What I am wondering does that put you in to another Air Force like you were in 1st, are you by any chance in 2nd now? I have been looking in our T.O. books at the maps, but they don't seem to give me that information. Let's see didn't you say something about being able to get a transfer into another place in case it was in the same Air Force? Since it is damp and cold, I am wondering if the climate will be very satisfactory with the skin condition. All I am doing is just wondering, of course every thing always works out and usually for the best, I hope. It will now only take 24 hours to get home, won't it?

Saturday when I got your letter, my first idea was if your folks had a phone I would have called them in case they hadn't heard of the move. I know how mother and dad enjoy hearing any news about Ray and Theo.

I will come to close and finish after I read your letter that awaits me at home; it has been raining for the last 48 hours continually. Hope it can be nice when you get your furlough I have a chance to buy a car, but since I can't see it, I am a little doubtful about it. It's a V-8, '35, they want $225. Some soldiers that are mechanics have had it, however I can't figure just why they want to get rid of it, if it is in good condition.

(Next day at work)

I stopped up-town and did some shopping in the rain, some of the stores say open on Monday night, helps out. So it was rather late. So you managed two Thanksgivings this year- not bad.

It looks as though by the letter, you might be home before this even gets to you and then again not. It will be o.k. to give me a ring at work ext. 21, however since it is a army place, they don't like a lot of personal visiting over the phone but such cases it would be alright.

I'll bet working at something different for awhile is a nice change. There is one good point about Nashville, good meals. Didn't Tampa have very good meals.

Let's see if you were still at Tampa, you would be on your way here by now, who knows maybe you are.

For the first time in days we have been busy today it seems every time I get this into the machine, out it comes some more work comes through. We have been having some big bugs around here the past several days, we have been informed to keep busy even if we don't have any thing to do. That is hard sometimes.

Well, it won't be long now until we see one another, after all we have been thinking of the used to be and the letters, one really don't know whether there is really any thing but friendship, however I have truly enjoyed every letter you have written, and above I do hope I don't disappoint you in any way, that is cute "you will die trying" you express my sentiments the way I feel about my self. Bye for now.

With love,
Kathleen

December 6, 1944

Dear Kathleen,

Gee! I certainly got a bang out of the way you stated it about my moving. Yes I do miss the sunshine very much but I do have better working hours and a lot easier job. Also we are closer to activities that take place at service club and it is only a fifteen minute bus trip to town. No, one never knows how long he will stay in one place while he is in the armed forces.

Yes, Kathleen I'm about half ways home but it won't be till around the last of this month till I'll be able to make the other half. I know you must be disappointed and so am I but there were too many new fellow back from overseas whom got preference which was only fair as they had not a furlough since they had been back home.

We are in Hq Airforce here so I'll just wear a plain ensign now if and when I get around to take the 3rd Air Force patch off. So we can be sent at almost minutes notice to some other part of the Unites States if they open up some more Convalescent Hospitals. We are under General Arnold's command.

I certainly would have been delighted if I could have taken you to that U.S.O formal. I fear I won't be able to make that one the 23rd but I do want to have the pleasure of taking you to the one at New Years time if they have one. Well if no other way we'll have a celebration all our own. New Years marks my folk's wedding anniversary and yes I guess I'll be a year older too.

It has been rather chilly here at least I thought so: Well it got cold enough to snow last weekend. Today it has been cloudy and rainy. I'm sort of getting used to the climate now though.

I believe I like it here alright. For one thing there is a friendly atmosphere around town and the service club. There is a dance at the club four times a week. Last nite they had Bingo and I won two meals at a Cafe in town so you should be around so we could go in for a chicken dinner.

I'm certainly going to try and improve my dancing as I had not danced since I was home last. These gals are very willing so I might as well take advantage of the fact as I had almost forgot how to keep time in music. They're having a dance this evening with the Air Force Band playing so I think I'll go over and swing out.

Again I want you to know I'd given anything to have been able to go to that formal but I'm still in the Army. By the way what would you like for Santa to bring you for Xmas this year. Sweet dreams till I hear from you again.

With love,
Milan

December 7, 1944

Dear Kathleen-

Three years ago Pearl Harbor was bombed as you no doubt remember only too well. Ah that time I was getting my medical basic training at Camp Grant, Rockford Ill. I can remember that Sunday as if it was yesterday for I stayed in that day and was fast asleep when the news came in over the radio and to this day it seems like a bad dream. Why all this? Well just to point out I guess what difference three years can make. I was all set to go home over New Years that time but as a result I went to California instead and never had a chance to see my folks till last year. Today I was in my office Ward 22 writing home when all of a sudden the phone rang. I answer the phone and I was told to report to the orderly room. I couldn't think what they could possibly want with me unless!!! Yes, you've guessed it by now, no doubt.

I signed my furlough application for fifteen days starting the 13th of Dec. but I don't get any travel time the Ward Officer approved it so I'll be on my way next week. Gee! I'll be home for Xmas and we'll be able to go to the formal. I will have to go to town and find out just when I can get a train or bus out and which one will get me home and back the fastest for I don't want to spend any more time traveling than absolutely necessary. I'll drop you a line as soon as I found out about the time of arrival. Gee!! I just seems too good to be true. So you can disregard the letter I wrote yesterday.

Yes. It is rather hilly I'd say and very smoky around here. These hills are similar to the foot hills in Calif. Yes it is very cool and damp at least it has been since I got here.

Well this certainly isn't the sort of climate I should be in but I'm not going to worry about it. So far I'm quite satisfied for I have a very nice set up. In fact it is almost too good to be true. We ate quite well at Mac Dill but not really as good as we do here. This food here is tops as for as I'm concerned.

Kathleen, you took the words right out of my mouth. It just doesn't seem possible that so much time has passed by. I've enjoyed every moment of it. I do so hope it is only the beginning but only time will yield the answer. Well as usual I must sign off somewhere so Good bye for now.

With Love, Milan

P.S. I'll be seeing you.

December 23, 1944

Dear Kathleen,

You surely took us by surprise! Your Christmas card came in the mail yesterday and then Ray came in last night with a telegram. Today your father's letter came telling about all the excitement. We both wish you the very best and hope you will be extremely happy.

I hope you will forgive us if we delay sending our gift until after I get to Denver. Ray can not get away to help pick it out and since Nashville is the nearest place to do any real shopping- we did our Christmas shopping over there- we agree that it will be best to wait until I am in a bigger place.

I regret very much we cannot be there for the wedding. However, it is impossible.

In regard to our coming by way of Topeka, Ray insists that I am to go straight west from here to Pueblo, keeping as far south as possible. I really would rather come by way of Topeka as I want to pack our possessions and send them on to Denver. This way I will have to make a trip by train that isn't anything to look forward to with traveling conditions what they are.

Since Johnnie and I are making the trip alone, and rather than to worry Ray when he has so much on his mind. Anyway, I shall do as he wished.

I hope you can be with Milan soon. Being an army wife has its disadvantages, but it is better than not being married. Ray and I have had almost three wonderful years tearing around together. When this is over, we can settle down with a bunch of happy memories and be glad we spent the war years together.

Please give our congratulations to Milan and the best of luck to both of you.

Love,
Margaret and Ray.

Birthday card from Kathleen to Milan

Milan dear,

This is a little remembrance on that certain important day, however it may get there a day or so late but it still has the same sentiments. I made them Sunday morning, in case you wonder the kind: hermits and an oversea cooky is in the bottom half the later can be kept for some time. It ripens with age. (Oh yes you may wonder why the lumps of brown sugar; it hardened, but I sent them anyway). If you bite down on something hard blame it on me, it's one of the shells I missed.

I love you so and hope this shall be the last birthday we won't be together.

Happy Birthday, Milan

Loads of love
Your wife

11:00 AM

My dearest Kathleen,

Honey I don't quite know how to write you but gee darling I love you so much.

My train got into St. Louis late this morning so I'll be late in getting back but I got a late slip from the passenger agent which will explain everything. I will leave here at 2:10 PM and get to Nashville at twelve-thirty tonite. So darling if and when you come down make sure you get the Missouri Pacific "Eagle" out of K.C. for St. Louis as it gives you more time to catch the LN for Nashville at St. Louis.

Honey I'm just bubbling over with joy and certainly hope and pray that we'll be able to settle down for a spell at least in Nashville. Oh! It is just perfect and gee it could have not been better if it had been planned for weeks.

He's hoping we get a lot of useful things at the shower tonite that we'll be able to use. See I do hope we took care of everything before I left.

I certainly hope those pictures turn out okay that we took and as soon as we get together we'll have some good ones made dearest. Even though I slept most of the time last evening I'm still dead tired so I'll certainly have to catch up on some long lost sleep before you get down. I hope Rev. Rogers sent in the Marriage Certificate to the Probate Judge. I'll check with him in Nashville and I'll take him out to "Morkers" for dinner there as I must do something for him as it was wonderful of him to come down and perform the marriage ceremony.

Darling here's hoping you can read this as I'm just a bit tired and nervous or something. "Pleasant Dreams and Oceans of Love Always".

Your Husband
Milan

December 29, 1944

Milan dear,

I am so excited and happy inside I don't know how to settle down. So much has happened in the past two weeks, even to the extent of making a bad slip, last evening about my new name. (I didn't recognize my own name and was trying to thank your mother for a gift). Did Carole and Ardis ever give me a laugh. I'll try to do better from now on ha!

Ruth had a lovely show for us. Wish you could have been there and we got so many nice things. Luncheon cloths, towels, bath rug set, $15 from Grandma (I hear $10 more is coming that will mean $75 from Grandma not bad). I guess she wanted to divide it up between shows and such. Next letter I'll give you a list of all the things we got- no pink elephants either- I had mentioned color schemes for the various rooms to Ruth- so all the kitchen things were in red and blue- towels were in rose and blue. That helps to have them match a little anyway. Ruth had some clever games I'll tell you about when I see you.

Last evening when I got home the folks informed me we were going down to see Margaret and "Johnnie", they had received a telegram saying she had sold the car and was coming through by train at 8 PM. We saw her a minute (5) so I guess Ray is on his way Eastward. He doesn't know she sold the car, some will surely get a good buy out of that car for it was surely up to par. Hope we can some day run into such luck. We probably can- guess Margaret hated to drive across country alone with "Johnnie".

Dear, you know when Carole and Ardis was waiting for us after the wedding, they had their car parked just west of the house down the road and watched us travel in and out of the house. Richard told them where the car was and had to get into the car and all he knew which was too much Honey. Did you feel the snow down your neck as we walked into the Kansan? Carole says they threw one. Carole is a card. Back at her old trick hasn't changed.

Oh yes, I find I can't get dental work here unless it is an emergency to be extracted or such. I guess he is too busy with the army fellows to take one of the wives.

Oh yes, honey, I will probably have some money to put in the checking account before coming to you. Like Grandma gift money, etc. Will I have any trouble getting it into the bank without the book?

Am on the way to the dentist, have run out of ink. Am on the way home, teeth fixed and all after having a time getting the air base bus.

I have the announcement ordered. Honey I'll send you some next week in case you care to send to any one I don't know of I ordered them from that place you mentioned.

I also have been up getting my name changed on the things at work. I did not get to talk with Lt. Mayo (the personnel officer) about the chance for a transfer. But it seems I won't be able to transfer unless there is a request for a job at your end. In case things look favorable to coming there. Some afternoon when you are off if you would drop into personnel office at your past and get the low down on jobs etc. You understand? Maybe it could be worked that way. I wished I'd shown you the letter from the Employment office they said "chances were good". I want to keep it and show it to Lt. Mayo tomorrow of course this is only with the possibility I come down there.

This is a mess I'll do better next time though. Goodness I miss you a "wee" bit or is it a lot. Yes, it is a lot

Loads of love and kisses
From your "wife" (doesn't it seem funny but its true. I love it)

December 29, 1944

My dearest Wife,

Well honey the way things are shaping up around here I don't think we'll be here two weeks. This unit is moving to Plattsburg, N.Y. near Lake Placid in some such place in Northern N.Y. as far as I know now. A few fellows will remain here and some go to other Convalescent hospitals over the states. As soon as I find out anything for sure I will give you a ring and let you know.

Darling I got some more copies of our marriage certificates being made and will pick them up Monday at which time I will get the allotment fixed up. I canceled my war bond as if we have some left over each month we can put it in our checking account.

Gee. There was an apartment advertised in the paper tonite for $40 which isn't too bad but since things are the way they are I won't even think about it.

I got in bed around 2:30 AM this morning so I didn't get much sleep. So I decided to go to bed as soon as I dropped you a few lines rather then go to the G.I. party the Detachment is putting on. Now if you could have been here it would be different as I'd gone even if I'm a bit tired darling.

They closed my ward so I'm doing detail work for Medical supply. This PM we moved wooden lockers back to the Quarter Master and I'll probably be doing work like that so long as we stay here as they only have about seventy patients all told.

Gee! Sweetheart it just doesn't seem possible that you are so far away from here. It just doesn't seem right that I can't hop in a car and see you or that you are not with me. Golly we certainly had a lot of fun and I'm certainly look[ing] forward to having you with me real soon.

Gee I certainly had a lot of Xmas cards waiting for me Kathleen from here there and everywhere. One very nice one from Lewis Vernon whom runs the elevator in Pauline.

Honey I sent a Anniversary card to the folks an regard it Sgt. and Mrs. M.W. I hope that is okay. Gee! It is still all very strange but it certainly is wonderful and wouldn't have it any other way. Gee I don't even know whether I even expressed my thanks to your folks for all the wonderful things they did for us. All this reminds me I must try and see Rev. B.A. Roger tomorrow eve if it can be arranged.

Gee my darling I do love you ever so much. Oh! I'll certainly be in the mood for love when we get together and how. I'm very sleep my love so perhaps I better wish you pleasant dreams and ever so much love, till we meet darling

Your devoted Husband
Milan

December 30, 1944

Milan dear,

I have a few minutes before its time to go home. I can't help wondering if I'm lucky enough to get a letter today- if not heck it won't be until Tuesday evening. Well it's just one of those things with two holidays together it was nice last week, but I see no advantages for we work New Year day. How about you? Do you work?

I can't help wondering if you got back without standing a lot of the time and two whether things look favorable there or else where. How about have you gotten caught up on your sleep? You probably were in no shape to report to work Friday morning or were you. I did a pretty good job of not letting you have too much sleep the past two weeks. But it was the most wonderful two weeks I've ever spent and to realize it is only the beginning of the most wonderful time and life with the most wonderful person in all the whole world- you.

I have talked with T. Mayo today it seems a transfer will be most possible. It must go through the Employment Office on eighth street. It just happened I got to talk to that man who was out here- now my present procedure is to get a transfer blank from the 8th St. fill out and send it. I guess they write down to Nashville and get me a job. I am not sure [about] the last procedure but I won't send in the filled in transfer blanks until I hear from you and what you want me to do- must go home now until later

Milan, darling that was the sweetest letter from you written in St. Louis. I know you must be dead, I have been. But I can hardly wait for the time to come to be with you. Everything happened so quick I guess I was taking for Granddad your present- now that you are gone. Gee! its lonesome. Incidentally Carole has asked me to celebrate New Year eve with her and stay all night with her in case she is still wound-up, we will paint the town red, however my first choice would be Nashville. I know you will have your hands full with everything and a place to hand our hats- you know anything that isn't too high then we can always look later.

Yes Milan we got a lot of lovely things many Ralden has been trying to tell me I should pick out my crystal which would give something for people to get, even something later for gift at Christmas. I almost tempted Mary has been informed there is a new shipment of crystal coming in if nothing but gotten for gifts. Maryln got hers that way.

I found the marriage certificate here. Ray hadn't even signed it I kept it couple days trying to think what I should do. I wanted to send it to you thinking you would see Ray, but Dad insisted I send it to Manhattan. I am a little afraid he won't bring back home too soon. I also sent the envelope and stamp so he can mail it to the probate judge.

Our calf came a little while ago. It's a heifer (nice) Dad's had it in the basement to warm it up. It's cute. A jersey and jersey dux mixture.

I have gotten all the pictures dime store and walgreens- only one picture came out of the wedding. I'm sending you them all except one of you I'm keeping until another comes it is very good. What do you think of the dime store ones I don't, to get prints which would be larger its 6 for $2.95 or 3 for 1.50. That to me is too much for the pictures.

I feel by writing would be best Don't you think? I am sending all the pictures to you. If you don't want all the dime store send them back but the snapshots I am getting more.

Ardis just called he informed me she wants to give me a shower Wednesday night. I had planned to go out to the folks. If i could get hold of them. Thursday I get the announcements- so you can imagine what I'll be doing. Tonight I got over to Carole's and Ardis will be there Monday Vera, Bob, Grandma and the folks are having dinner together. Tuesday Mary Alden wants to see me at Grandma. Wed. the shower (I am a little disappointed because it's personal) it would have been nice to have something for our home. I told Mother they might include you, Milan, in the personal shower because I have every thing I need along that line.

I shall draw this to a close with Loads of love darling- hoping it won't be long until we are together

Your wife

P.S. We got a lot of lovely things. Am still promising myself to send you a list. Oh yes the Bass family gave us a beautiful flower vase with stand about 6" its white lined with rose colored glass. Lovely piece.

December 30 7:30 PM

My dearest Kathleen,

Darling just a few lines to tell you I'm still here. I tried to get in touch with Rev. Rogers at Peabody College over the telephone but so far no luck. I would have gone to town but it is raining out of doors and the convention is on this eve and figured I wouldn't get to see him anyway. Tomorrow we get paid at 10 AM and at time we are suppose to turn in all our passes so I doubt whether I'll even be able to get to town anymore if I'm moved and from all reports only a very few will remain here.

I'm going to send you the latest and last issue of the camp paper. It gives you an idea of Plattsburg N.Y. The camp is only a mile from the center of town. The town is only 23 miles from Canada and just across Lake Champlain from Vermont. Dearest the unit is moving up there but as yet no one knows whom is going up there with it. Come what may my love I want you with me where ever I may be stationed as we'll make out somehow.

Happy New Year and gee it is wonderful to have so much to be thankful for and look forward to. I've got ever so many letters I must answer if I can manage. Certainly am looking forward to seeing those pictures. I got another roll of film yesterday so we'll be able to take some snapshots where ever we got "eh".

I caught up on my sleep last nite and feel very good this eve but I plan to go to bed early and catch up on some more sleep. Darling I certainly was wore out and I don't mean perhaps.

Darling I do hope you are fine and dandy and have all those beans cleaned up by now. Gee what a nite that was. It certainly was one we'll long remember.

Honey I still catch myself dreaming and I certainly can't hardly believe we are not still with one another. Here's hoping it won't be long now before we are moved to where ever they decide to send us. Here is a big hug and ever so many kisses to you my sweet one. Golly you are one swell wife but gee darling we just didn't have enough time together! Oh! I do love you ever so much and give anything if I could hop down there for just a few moments.

Say I'll bet we got a lot more nice things the other nite. I'm anxious to know what we got. Well perhaps I'll get a letter tomorrow or Monday I hope from you. I certainly have plenty from my relatives and boys overseas. I have one from Alfred Bates but it was written the 10th of Dec.

I've been moving 2m stocks to the warehouse all day and I suppose thats what I'll do the rest of the time I'm here.

Now my dearest I must say good-nite so here is a great big sweet kiss for you. It is ever so hard to quit but darling I must draw a line some where you know.

Ever so many kisses to show my love for you my dear and now pleasant dreams until tomorrow.

Your Husband
Milan

December 31 1944

Kathleen Darling,

Piter! Pater! on my window pan as this Old Year passes out and the new one comes to life. Yes, Honey in a few more hours we'll be starting "1945" together and what a wonderful feeling that is to me and I know that goes for you also. Gosh it is wonderful to know I have you as a partner to go through life with. Gee! a lot did happen in two weeks but at the time it seemed like a mighty long time "eh". I wouldn't give up any of those precious moments we spent together and I'm certainly looking forward to many many more in the years to come my loved one.

It certainly was a thrill to receive your letter of the 29th today. Say we certainly got a lot of things we can use. Gosh I sure would have given anything to have been there to enjoy the shower for it must have been a lot of fun. Gee! Grandma certainly has done right well by us. Red and blue is certainly a good color scheme.

Sure was swell that you got to see Margaret and "Johnnie" even if it was only for a few minutes. I certainly don't blame Margaret for taking a train for the highways were one big mass of ice east of St. Louis. One was taking life in his own hands to venture on roads like that. It is still raining like no ones business out of doors. So I guess I'll stay indoors where it is fairly dry at least. The roof is leaking and water is coming in around the windows but it is still a lot better then being out in the weather. I called the YMCA last eve and they informed me Rev. Rogers had checked out and gone over to Peabody College so I called over there but I wasn't able to contact him but if it clears off tomorrow eve I'll see if I can say hello to him.

I did wonder where Carole and Ardis were parked. They had a lot of fun and I enjoyed and I suppose you did too. Sort of would not have been complete. Although I didn't enjoy the breakfast food very much. Well darling it is all a memory now which I would give up for anything.

Honey I'll put the bank book in this letter if I don't forget as I'll want you to deposit some money for me also. I canceled my ward bond and will get your allotment made out Monday or I should say Tuesday as I suppose no one will work tomorrow. Sure glad you got the announcements ordered. Honey, you certainly have been on the beam.

Dearest I hope you get used to your new name. I almost slipped on it myself last evening. Honey if anything comes up I'll call you up but until then I'll wait even though it would be wonderful to hear your voice darling. Honey I'll see the personal officer as soon as I get to where ever I'm going if I move and from all indicators we will.

Well honey my pen is about empty again. Just a bit better "eh". Today was pay day so I'm a few dollars richer so perhaps I'd better go to the post office and get a money order or I may just enclose the money. All depends how I feel about it. It is a lot safer if one uses a money order.

Darling I do "miss" you but will have to wait until I get settled a bit "eh". I certainly hope it isn't too long before they decide whether and when we move. Gosh! It is rather strange when one thinks about it but I do love it my dear. Honey I did enjoy your wonderful ending. I'd like to go on and on but line and paper doesn't permit. So until tomorrow.

Oceans of Love and Loads of Kisses
from your "Husband"

January 1st, 1945

Darling,

Just to let you know I'm dreaming of you my loved one. One whole day of 45 has almost gone down in history and tomorrow I'll be one day older. Gee honey time certainly does fly by fast. Say I got the allowance papers made out today as you'll get $50 for January but it won't get to you until some time in February according to what I was told. I also got 4 Photo reprints of the marriage certificate today which gave me 5 copies all together.

We had a swell turkey dinner with cranberry sauce, giblet gravy, peas, soup and mince pie and a few other things and then tonite we had creamed turkey with all the trimmings. Yes we had apples, oranges, bananas and nuts too. I'm certainly going to try and gain some weight if it is possible. I've also been getting my share of sleep and not working too hard honey.

There isn't a thing new except a lot of rumors and lot of the officers are packing so I guess the moving is going through.

January 2, 1945

Milan dear,

Happy Birthday, sweetheart you are one year older today. Am wishing you more happy ones. I am a little worried about those things- box for fear they are hard by now. Dad couldn't get them mailed until this morning, but fear not for I'll do better (I hope) next time.

I got through talking with a girl from Texas that is traveling around with her husband. She was telling what a wonderful time they were having together. She isn't have a bit of trouble transferring around with her husband. My commanding officer was telling me yesterday that I wouldn't have any trouble and that I would remain at the same rating that I wouldn't lose it at all, which sounds good. "C AF 2". So as I understand just as soon as I send in the transfer blank I am practically transferred from here as things stand.

You know darling, I mentioned about a wash machine? Carole says they don't even know what they are in the South, so I want you to realize I am not expecting the best. Carole says everything is very crude and very few conveniences- oh heck! I don't care just so I have you.

I guess Carole and Ardis are having that personal shower to fix me up with a lot of fussy things. They are trying to tell me that men like things like that and that is one way to hold a man- is that true? I am just wondering. For I feel it's deeper then that. My idea is not bringing anything more then necessary to be burdened with and save these lovely things for our home we shall have some day. What's your opinion? Would you rather I bring all new things and the loveliest ones? My idea is to save those for our home and that will be just one less thing to get how do you feel?

Carole and I went to the show Sunday even. to see "The Doughgirls" and then I stayed all night with her. I'd like to have seen "30 seconds over Tokyo" but Carole didn't want to. I guess the sentiment of it.

Milan do you remember an Ed Cox? He was over to Carole's with Phynn the other evening; they were saying you went to school with him. He is teaching in western Kans. I guess he was a pal of Jack Lee's.

Am sorta planning on going out to your home Thursday or Friday which even. they would rather I come. Will see your Mother Wednesday evening at the shower.

Well I'll finish this after I get home and read my mail-

(Later)

Oh, darling I am truly the happiest person. I have gotten the pictures from the drug store and also your letter I've read and reread a number of times. You know to tell you the truth I have my fingers crossed and am concentrating on some place warmer then Plattsburg N.Y. for you to go. I don't think it will be too good for you and well it is sorta going to be cold there, time will tell. All I'm doing is being ready to do anything; when you say the word, I'll fit in. I am anxious just as much as you to be with you, but even if it takes several weeks to a month.

That is nice about the marriage certificate being made. You know one of the girls ask[ed] me if you were getting the allotment fixed up in the month of Dec.- if you did we would get a check for Dec. around the 1st of Jan. Of course she might be wrong, but she mentioned her husband did. Honey do you think it really necessary to cancel that band? That is one way to save. Oh Gee! I can't wait to see how we can make out. I know we can do it. Carole talks like they couldn't even live on 1st Lt. wage, but I feel there is two ways of living: extravagant and economical. Up to now my check every two weeks have been $44.80 being married about $5 more Income tax plus $7.50 on my raise being $57.50 plus $7.50 bond every two weeks. Lets see that's around $130 per month. I do feel we two can live on that don't you. That doesn't include what the army gives you and the allotment which can be along the line of saving for a rainy day.

Oh yes darling, Mother and I have been shopping, in fact I have picked out a set of dishes. I know you will like. They look expensive with a dull gold edge and soft small flower design of rose, green, blue for $16.20- 52 piece, 8 setting. It is an open set that we can always replace even later when we have a home, since Topeka will always be our headquarters. It is sorta nice. The name is Princess Rose. Oh yes I have also picked out the crystal- didn't get any, it will give folks something to give when giving presents. Another thing they have is a table of pieces that have a nickel out of it, just very small though, they sell very cheap that one can get. That will give Mother something to do. Ha! It's called Novasse in case you happen to be in a store in town you could ask to see it. It's a master etched popular pattern. None of that gold we saw.

It sounds like maybe leaving your job to come home left you without a job. Am hoping you won't have to do that detail long, I bet you were tired on Friday. I tell Mother I guess I'll have to leave town to get any rest myself at the rate everyone has me going strong.

Sweetheart I mentioned in the last letter about maybe you would like to send some of the announcements out maybe to some of your friends you see it was so very little more to go and get 100. I didn't think 50 would do it. So I will send some to you if you want them. They are not engraved but printed- you could send them along with your regular letters you would write them. That is what I'm going to do to my girl friends. I am going to get them tomorrow.

Velma wrote to day asking me if I was coming out to California etc. Will she get the surprise of her life. I thought I'd put the announcement in a letter I write her.

Oh yes Milan I got a box through the mail today from Mrs. and Mrs. C.H. Spangler 316 Harrison. It was dusting powder and bath of sweets in Avon products and a hankie. I remember the name, but just who are they. Please don't think I'm forgetful. But it's a little hard to get them all straight. Oh yes I was trying to figure the relationship the Bass's are to you.

Oh Gee! I seem to rattle on for ever and say nothing. It just pops into my head. It sounds as though you won't get any rest when I get to see you at this rate. But I do love you so and am looking for[ward] to that day. I am boarding the train to you- when ever it may be.

Loads of Love, darling
Your loving wife.

January 3, 1945 (written at work)

My dearest Hubby,

Yes, isn't it strange, I [am] still hesitating on my new name and find myself looking around when Mrs. Smercheck is called out. But it is all so wonderful and I am so very proud of you darling. I have had another set of those pictures printed from your camera, have been showing them here at work. Do I ever puff up inside when they say Gee! but he is good looking or handsome. I try to tell them he is even much more then handsome. He is perfectly wonderful.

Sweetheart I think I'll have to have you mention in your letter not to bring very much or something. Mother has me bringing oh so much. Maybe that will be way to convince her. Just how many shirts would I bring you started to mention something about such- you know we can always write home for things if necessary or heck! don't think I'm crossing the bridge before I get there. All I'm doing is dreaming that I'm on the way.

That was very nice of you to send the anniversary card with both names. Gee! I'm not very thoughtful, it seems.

Oh, yes, darling you did express your thanks to my folks. They surely enjoy the card you sent from St Louis too. And my folks think the world of you. Maybe you wondered why we distributed those pictures among those cards and letters, it was to save adding more stamps to one.

I am going to the shower this evening at Ardis'. Am going over to Grandma's after work to have supper and clean-up instead of going home.

Well I'll finish this letter later maybe I'll have a letter awaiting me- one never knows.

(1:00 AM)

Oh darling, such a lovely letter from you. You are the most wonderful husband. No we were not together much but I feel this way, we will soon when such time permits. We have everything wonderful to look forward to, haven't we. Each other. Oh darling, we have a whole life to have a wonderful time together and just think- we don't have the worry and fear of having to be separated by an ocean, like so many couples. Oh I love you so darling and always shall.

You know I think once you are stationed one place for a while and lady luck presents us with just the right buy in a car. Then when ever you are moved I will be able to move with you on the same gas that I believe they allow you don't they. It won't be half bad.

You know sweetheart I can hardly wait to hear whether you move with them or stay. Of course I realize you will let me know when you know. I have [a] hunch that you will go with the bunch to NY. Sounds you can't take the climb [and] be transferred south in a couple of wks. to a month to the south of Florida or something- you know I sorta sometimes wish while you were moving around you can see LA or near. I just want you to see that place.

Now to tell you about the lovely shower this evening. It was fixed up so cute with a pink umbrella where they place the presents. For games they worked their names on tea towels, a clever idea. I think we will have the towels. The lovely gift we received was a pair of pillows made from geese feather and some other kind of feathers from your mother. The ticking was a pretty green. Gee but it was lovely that was from your Mother. Won't that be a lovely thing for our home. They will go to the cedar chest until we have a nice home. Nothing doing carrying such lovely pillows around.

This was a personal shower. I got lace neck pieces, hankies, panties, bubble bath. Irene S. stationary, 2 pairs of flannel pajamas, guests towels, $10 from Grandma (you know what I want to get with that money a electric iron. That is something I don't have that we need bad). A modern light weight automatic huh.

Oh darling I must draw this to a close and will write again. It is very late. I am going out Friday even. to your house after work.

Oh sweet heart I love you with all [my] heart. Sweet dreams until tomorrow, sweet dreams.

Loads of love and kisses
Kathleen, your lovely wife

From Milan

That one picture of you and myself isn't too bad and there is one fair one of me from the dime store. Honey those snapshots certainly turned out very good in my opinion. I'll send those little ones all back except one which I put in my billfold to carry around and show people. Darling I'll keep those big ones with me since you got some more ordered. The family picture certainly turned out very good in my way of thinking. Gee darling you certainly look wonderful in those snapshots. Gee I could just hug you and kiss you my dear. Yes my love that was also the most wonderful and joyful time in all life and why shouldn't it have been for I had you- and dearest we've only begun our happy life together.

Darling I certainly hope you don't get too lonesome for it certainly won't be too long before you'll be able to join me wherever I'm stationed. Honey I'm certainly looking forward to the day you can come up and I don't mean perhaps. I certainly hope in the mean time you find something to keep you occupied. Golly those showers certainly must have been a lot of fun and I certainly would have given anything to have been able to enjoy all those things with you. Well I suppose those personal articles will come in handy honey.

Honey I'm also of the opinion we probably should wait and see if we can get some good pictures made. Say the flower vase must be rather pretty.

Once again my darling I must bring this letter to a close. Loads of love and kisses and here's hoping it won't be very long before we can be together my love.

Your husband,
Milan

P.S. Good nite Darling.

January 3, 1945

Kathleen dearest,

Honey I'm back with you once again. Certainly hope you didn't miss too much my love as I went to town and looked up Rev. Rogers. We had a wonderful talk and I got in around midnite. The YMCA didn't appeal to him so he got himself a nice room in the Sam Davis Hotel. If my clothes get back from the cleaners Friday I'll try and see him off as he will leave on the 7:30 train.

Darling the first bunch of fellows leave for N.Y. tomorrow or Friday and the rest are due to leave in about five days so I should know this weekend. So honey I'll try and call you Sunday and let you know the latest. If we do go north you'll have to get yourself some nice warm wool slacks or something to keep warm. Rev. Rogers figured we'd like it very much up there. From all reports darling the housing situation is pretty good and the gov't isn't discouraging the fellows from taking their wives along so I must be okay up there. There will be some Civil Service openings. Also the P.X. always needs help and one can usually pick up some work if he wants to work so darling I'm sure it will work out okay. Even if you didn't work sweetheart we'd get along okay and above everything honey I do want you near me where ever I'm stationed.

No letter from you today my love but no doubt there is due to New Years Day. Golly honey I sure appreciate your remembering me on my Birthday yesterday and the cards arrived on time exactly. That certainly was a swell card from you and I must let your folks know I also received their very fitting and and I certainly want to think of them as Mother and Dad always.

Yes I was on duty New Years day but we didn't do a lot. As a matter of fact I've not hurt myself since I got back to Nashville. Today we moved some more furniture and books and such and of course kept the fire going in the warehouse.

In case I had not told you honey I was quite fortunate in the fact I had a seat almost all the way back and also slept a greater part of the way. Yes I've caught up on my sleep and I sort of believe I've put on a couple pounds of weight since I got back. This morning I weighed myself with my jacket and I tipped the scales at 165 so I'm quite a bit heavier than when I was in Florida.

This morning we counted dishes so we were taking them out of the barrel and putting them in another one. This PM we just sat around and listened to the radio. Then at 4 PM I had to hear the Articles of War which govern all our activities. Tomorrow morning we are due to move some more lockers from what I hear.

Well honey it quit raining some time last nite but it snowed a little today but the sky is clear and weather very crisp outside tonite. If we are here tomorrow and weather remains favorable I'm going to try and pay Rev. Rogers a visit and say Hello at least but no telling we might be moving so I'd better not plan on it too hard. Yes Sweetheart I'll certainly be glad when they decide what they are going to do with us for then we can make some sort of plans. I hope you understand how things stand around here.

Darling this isn't much of a letter but I just had to say hello to you and send you a little love and lots of kisses. Oh! it certainly is wonderful and I'm so happy. Honey I do hope those pictures turn out okay. I had three rolls at the drug store you know. I sent the Bank book and $50 last evening so I hope you get it okay. Now my dearest I want to wish you ever so many pleasant dreams and remember darling I do love you ever so much. So until tomorrow

Loads of Love and Kisses
from your Husband

January 4, 1945

My dearest Hubby,

Oh darling I am just wondering what you are doing this evening or where you are. If you are on the move. Not getting a letter today makes me wonder if that isn't the case. I am a little lonesome tonight, There has been so much doing for the past three weeks and now that things are settling down and realize I'm not just dreaming, it's all true. For I have dream of such a person like you but how little I knew it was you, Milan dear.

Milan, do you know anything about the fact soldiers can get electric automatic irons? One of the girls was telling me that is something I do not have. I hear the OPA price is around $9.

Darling I am enclosing a copy of all our gifts, those pillows your mother gave us are just beautiful. I really love them.

Oh yes I am sending a copy of the announcement to you I have gotten plenty of them if you care to drop any in some of your boy friends letters over seas and the like I'll send as many as you would like. I just don't want to burden you down with something you don't want, but if you want them you are welcome to them.

I am taking some out with me to your folks maybe they will thank of more, changes or maybe I'll need to ask about addresses. It also will give her something to do and think about. It sorta helps to get ones mind on other things- don't you think. I bet your mother gets pretty lonesome. I am going out tomorrow Friday evening. Rudy is meeting me at the Coop store. I'll meet the Poston's after that and ride with them. Rudy had a pretty bad cold last evening. Your mother's knee she says is better. has been to the doctor's. I just happen to think I might offer to take your mother any place she wants to go when I get there. If she wanted to I've been chauffeur for mother and grandma a good many years. I guess I should have found out if there were any details one should know about driving the car of course it's all just- in case she wants me to. I might as well be of some use.

Oh dear I can ramble on and say nothing. Gee! you know I am just beginning to realize I miss you- up to now I was trying to catch up on sleep and keep up my obligations- now that is nearly over and you are not around- it's lonesome. Mother was talking with one of my good friends that is home for the duration- husband has gone over and they find Ray and Bill her husband has the same APO numbers but I realize how lucky I am that you have already served your oversea duty.

I do wish I was a mind reader and knew whether you were in Tenn or head north east. Oh yes just for fun I've written to Plattsburg US Employment. It doesn't hurt anything- you know pretty soon I'll know all about a bunch of cities I've never seen, it's fun, or may never see.

Well I better close or I won't be able to get this in the envelope.

Oh yes darling- we have a package as soon as I know you are not on the move. No point in loosing a package. I was showered gifts at the personal shower someone wanted to remember you (I think its nice).

"Goodnight sweet heart until we meet-tomorrow"

Loads of love, darling
Your loving wife

January 4, 1945

Kathleen dearest,

Honey I'm leaving for Plattsburg tomorrow and will get there Saturday evening. All the phones were busy this evening and then I couldn't get through so honey I'm going to pack everything and then if I have some time I'll try again. Darling I got your letter today which sort of gave me the go ahead signal so I'll go to town as soon as I possibly can and try and find a nice apartment up there and call you and let you know what we'll need. Dearest I sure hope I can get a hold of you tonite and let you know for you could get your transfer started and be on your way a lot faster. My name was added to the original list so that's why I didn't know yesterday.

Well darling I'll try and get as nice a place as I can and as you say honey we can always move if we don't like it. Yes. If I have you, is what matters my love. Nice things are okay honey but as far as I'm concerned it is much deeper than that. Dearest my love for you is more than just skin deep. Of course I want you to look attractive and dressed neat but honey you don't need anything fussy though. It would be a shame to drag along any more stuff than you absolutely have to. I also would rather save it for the home we shall have back in Topeka or there abouts one of these days. Darling I hope I've answered your question.

Yes, I remember Ed Cox he graduated in "35" if I remember right. I went to school a few years with him I know. That would put him in Jack Lee's class.

I was told I couldn't get an allotment for Dec so January will be the first one. From what they told me we would have had to been married earlier in the month in order to get one in Dec. This check will not arrive until some time in January. Dearest I can always put money in our savings account at home and if we should ever need it we can draw it out but these war bonds will be hard to cash after the way in my way of thinking so I just figure I have enough of them in the bank already. Darling I can't help but feel we could live on my salary and the allotment if we had to easily. I can't see why you shouldn't be able to find some work to help out. Being with one another is the main thing darling. All the money in the world won't bring happiness.

The china certainly sounds okay to me as does the crystal. Well in case I get where they have either pattern and they have them I'll take a peek but sort of sounds doubtful if they'll have much up there in that line but one never knows "eh".

Honey coming home didn't effect my job in the least for they would have closed my ward anyway. No doubt I'm being sent ahead first to set a ward up there in Plattsburg Barracks. So darling in my way of thinking I'll all set to stay up there. Well my love will just have to make the best of it up there. It will be cold but I don't think we'll mind it for it won't change from day to day.

Sure honey I'd like to send some announcements to the boys along with my letters. Of course you let me know whom you sent some to if you send some to my relatives.

Mrs. Spangler was my teacher in grade school. Mrs. Bass is my cousin and a sister of Francis Hartzel's husband she is a Krasney now you know I hope I've made myself clear.

Well honey neither one of us will get much sleep for the first few nites we are together for gee it will be wonderful to have you with me and I don't mean perhaps. Darling I do love you ever so much as I certainly hope everything does work out so we can be together before very long. Honey you certainly have made me one happy man and darling I'm going to do my best to make you happy too. So my loved one I'll be looking for you in Plattsburg N.Y. before very long.

Loads of love and kisses too Darling
Your loving husband
Milan

P.S. Got insurance policy on the ring today. Ever so much love honey and pleasant dreams to you "Good nite".

January 6, 1945

My dear Hubby,

Oh darling I just got a call from Mother, she says 3 letters from you 2 Free and 1 Air Mail all mailed the 4th. The postmark is the 4th. Oh darling I can hardly wait to arrive home to read them and find out the news. There must be something of interest- not having heard I drew the conclusion you must be on your way some place, but maybe not.

I was out to your home last evening. Gee! I had a nice time your mother is so nice- you know it makes a fellow get icky feel to see you even much more after being with his folks, I can't help it, but I think if and when you say come I sure will stick like glue near you ha! ha! You understand. I can't see how a few of there wife remain someplace else when they could be with their husband. I never realize I could feel so close to you, even though we have been together so little. It thrilled me with joy to realize I have such a wonderful husband that I shall always have a chance to make happy all my life.

Sweetheart- I don't know how you feel about reading your letters to your folks or mine, but I have read the newsy parts of your letters to your folks giving them idea of what changes of moving, etc. I feel it helps you by letting them know, I feel it makes them happier too.

Maybe it's cause I find myself doing things that my mother wishes her daughter-in-laws would do for her and since you haven't had time to write them and I can be helpful to pass the newsy information on; not our own personal feelings however. Because if I felt if ones letters are passed on to someone else to read One would become very careful just what they write. I guess One rambled on and said nothing. But many things I feel I don't know just how you feel about things after all its pretty nice to do them the way you like to do. Isn't it. Not just my way.

It's almost time to go home. Am dropping this in the box on the way home. I am planning on remaining home and go[ing] to bed early since I must work tomorrow- Sunday. Will send this just straight not air mail. Let's see what goes the fastest. Here I got yours just the same if mother looking at the stamp right.

If it doesn't go any faster Air Mail, it's fastest to use it- how about it.

Oceans of love sweetheart. I will write tomorrow and thank-you notes too.

Love and Kisses
Your Wife

P.S. I can't wait to see what you have to tell me. I live for those letters. They are so nice.

January 7, 1945

Kathleen dear,

If my letter came through you know where I'm at today. The trip went off as planned and we arrived safe and sound early this morning. We unloaded around 7:30 AM and then had a little breakfast and unloaded our baggage. I got my stuff hung up and then washed and shaved for dinner. We had chicken, potatoes and gravy, corn, coffee and ice cream. So far we can't leave the area but as soon as I can I intend to call you honey and find out what I should do. From all indications the sooner I get a place the better off we'll be as there are not very many good places from what I hear and they want a plenty for all of them. One of the boys got a three room apt everything furnished for $59 except he has to pay for electricity and gas.

There is about eight or ten inches of snow on the ground and still is snowing. It is plenty cold but if you are dressed for it isn't too cold. The post is very nice what I've seen of it. I don't have any idea what I'll be doing but I suppose I'll be back in the ward. Well my love I'm sure things will get back to normal before long but right now I don't know whether I'm coming or going. Darling I certainly hope it won't be long and gee it certainly will be grand to have you with me.

Honey it will be a few days before our letters start coming through but I'll bear through it somehow. I'm thinking of you my love and gee I do hope you are fine and dandy. Hope you made it to my folks. Here's a big hello to your Mom and Dad.

There is some talk [from] ward master [that] if they are married will be able to get quarters here on the post but we'd probably have to furnish it which would be great. Well my loved once I shall do the best I can my love. I'll probably have to get a place off the post first and then this place on the post. So dearest that's that my love for now. Ocean of love darling

Loads of hugs and kisses
Your loving Husband

Jan 8th 1945

My dearest Wife,

Honey it certainly was wonderful to hear your voice once again and I don't mean perhaps. I was at the drug store and they couldn't make connections as NYC was busy but before I got to the USO Club they got it through and called me there. Hows that for service? Honey I hope you didn't mind paying for it as I only had $10 with me in cash. It isn't a good idea to carry very much money when one is moving around.

The C.H. Unit from Nashville is taking this base over which has been occupied by the Navy. The hospital is due to open up around the first of Feb. There wasn't any apts available yesterday but one can get rooms with kitchen privileges which would do in a pinch till we could get a place. There is a 3 room apt near by for $20 with everything furnished but it is heated with coal and only has the one kitchen stove otherwise it looks very homely I'd say. Seen the fellow in charge of Chamber of Commerce yesterday and he said he would have some more places either today or tomorrow so I'll have to call him up today and find out.

Darling I can't help but feel I'm here to stay as they only send up about ten medical techs and I'm sure there will be room for that many men. The hospital isn't very big but it will be enlarged. It certainly is quite a ways from home but the town is quite nice and reminds me of Manhattan a lot.

Here's hoping you can get your transfer through. I'm quite sure you'll be able to get a job on the post okay. You'll want some Ski pants, warm gloves, ear muffs, warm overshoes and socks. The cold isn't bad up here at all as long as one dresses up for it. I don't think it is as bad as at home for it stays cold here. There are a lot of winter sports here and a lot of things to do in the summer such as boat trips, fishing, picnics and sightseeing, etc.

Darling, I suppose I better close for now but here's hoping to see you soon but in the mean time I'll keep you informed and I'll be dreaming of you. Pleasant dreams honey.

Oceans of love and kisses,
Your loving husband
Milan

P.S. The post is about a mile from the center of town right on the lake. All the buildings are brick construction with steam heat. A bus comes by camp every half an hour. One can walk to town just about as fast. Two nice show houses in town and one which seats 550 on the post. Also have an USO in town, Service Club on the post and use the Gym for dances I'm told. Pop. 13,000 in Plattsburg has teachers College. Tourist town. So long for now.

Dearest Milan,

I could just hug you [to] death if I had you, how even it won't be too much long. I'll be prepared for the cold weather, it would be kinda fun to see that part of the country. Have you even been that far north? While we are at it we might as well see all the points of interest. maybe it won't be as easy on our own time and money and then this gives a fellow an idea what parts are most interesting for a hurried vacation some day- pipe dream huh!

Oh yes did I mention I've written to Plattsburg US Employment. It can't hurt anything, just things _____[word not legible] faster if that is the destination.

You know I had a very nice visit with your mother- she is so understanding and a peach too as time goes on maybe we can help her by picking up nice things she might enjoy- you know I know it helps my mother for me to go pick out a dress then send her down to try and try it on in case it won't fit. Oh heck! I'm off the track but I get a kick out of helping people pick out their colors clothes or what have.---- Back to us.

Darling these are sweetest letters honey I do wish I could express my self as well as you do. I do do love you very dearly and I want you to know it.

Oh yes Milan I received the check book 50 correct Gee! It doesn't look as though you kept any yourself. I shall place that in the bank Wed. I have an appointment to get a permanent at that time, so will do both at that time. I better get that other money out of my account and put it into this one at that time, maybe Wed will be the only day I take off. I want to save my annual leave to be with you out there.

Another thing honey all business or legal things that I use my name [on] I plan to use Kathleen W Smerchek. Dad seems to feel it less confusing especially when they want it written out. It explains what ones name used to be. If we get started with F later on there is confusion. Mother has found it true for she uses P instead of Whitiker in W.

what I am driving at I am wondering if the allotment should not be corrected or changed to W instead of F; it may not seem important, but I am having my identifications with W which might place a confusion, even the Bank book has W. I know am very busy confused and just wondering and writing to where you will be. So maybe it is not the proper time to make the change of F to a W but I am wanting to cancel all later confusion that might occur. Dad is the one that feels there might be a confusion. He writes out a lot of junk for Grandma who uses both and it's very confusing, they try to tell him it isn't the same person and a few things that wouldn't have been necessary had she stuck to one name and initial. I want you to know I do appreciate the sample copy of it though. I'll read it after I write you.

Don't you think we should work and get some pictures later instead of have dime store made up. Am surprised you didn't keep the best of us two.

Oh yes we got a nice letter from Margaret. She plans to return to Topeka soon or later to get her things. They are (Johnny and she) going to live in a lake house back or near her sister and brother in law. Oh yes best of all she announced that "Johnny" is to have a sister "Janie" in August, it's a little early to announce it, but since she told us, we are definitely very happy. I guess they decided "Johnny" better have a companion which is [an] excellent idea.

Darling, as I reread your letter how true you express my sentiments yes though two weeks seem much longer. It also thrills me to realize I have you to make happy and best of all its for a life time. I can hardly believe it.

Sure it wouldn't have been complete without some fun. Carole and Andre say if there had been more of them they would have come up to the room. You know I guess I still fell distant and scared so at that time all was fine until it was time to go to the room. Gee I was frightened for I didn't know what you expected of me. I's all very foolish I guess.

I'll send about ten announcements to you, and then if you want me I'll send you more. I have sent all of that list you gave me and some more except what your mother wanted to add notes in and all my friends- now for the thank-you letters to be written.

Oh yes darling you mentioned about calling. I hope and pray it's in the evening you call Sunday- For I must work at the Depot. Our office is moving to a new warehouse Sunday, so you see I maybe make that move. I will be the only one there- wish you were going to [be] here to visit here.

Oh yes sweetheart I am going to bring that hat (yours) the one you look so nice in. I hope you don't mind? It would be nice for dress. Incidentally is there anything else you want me to bring? How about those dandy looking "undies" I took off the line last evening- your mother had washes in case NY is the location. I won't be the only one who needs warm clothes. I'll bring what I have in the way of slacks which are 2nd best now I gave them some hard wear, in case we do go to NY. One probably can find things up there.

I am sorta hoping wherever you are going will cause me to go through Chicago, Phil., or NY for I have some clothing that is wearing out that I need to be replaced but I couldn't find here at all. Only huge dept. stores carry, never realizing, or I'd stocked up when it was possible.

About the allowance will it be okay to just send the $50 to the bank or is it necessary I [not legible] it. Let's see didn't we decide it was to be placed into the saving account: what was your idea?

You rated well with a turkey dinner NYears. That gaining sounds good. It's not the thing to have your mother fix my lunch, She puts too many good things in it. She is sweet.

So you have your sleeping caught up wonderful. I am having a time it looks like I'll have to get caught up when I get down there. No I'll do my best before I see you.

Yes, I understand perfectly darling that it may be 2, 3, or even 5,6 weeks before it is the thing to come. All I am doing is just being ready and have all matters taken care of. For I feel your judgment is [not legible] when even you get settled there are several matters before I come such as a room- a place to hang our hats.

You say you had three rolls of film at the drug store. I only got 2. Are you thinking of the roll you took some of Irene? Just wondering? Because I can only produce 2.

I must close and go to bed sweet dreams Ocean of love
Kisses.
